Drexel University co-op student employees and summer interns at FS Investments joined West Philadelphia community members to create beautiful green space
PHILADELPHIA, PA – August 11, 2017 – Volunteers from the FS Foundation, the philanthropic arm of FS Investments, dedicated their Wednesday to beautifying a local West Philadelphia community garden with organizers from the Urban Tree Connection – a non-profit dedicated to urban land revitalization and redevelopment.
The beautification project is part of the FS Foundation’s employee service program, which includes monthly volunteer events and ongoing in-office service opportunities. As part of their co-op cycle with FS Investments, Drexel University student employees and other interns were given the opportunity to select one of the monthly service events and volunteer as a group. They chose to give back to their University City community through a day of service.
“We want our summer interns and co-op students to fully experience our firm culture, and that includes engaging in our community service program,” said Mike Gerber, Executive Vice President of FS Investments and President of the FS Foundation. “From our most senior leaders to our interns and co-ops, we encourage all of our colleagues to embrace a mindset of civic responsibility.”
The student employees spent the afternoon weeding, mulching and cleaning the grounds of a community garden that is maintained by the Urban Tree Connection.
“We are very proud of our Drexel co-ops and other interns for volunteering in their local community by working with Urban Tree Connection,” said Mia Fioravanti, Executive Director of the FS Foundation.
“Urban Tree Connection depends greatly on volunteer support to maintain our community gardens,” said Lisa Barkley, Community Liaison at the Urban Tree Connection. “We’re thankful for the partnership opportunity from the FS Foundation and the efforts of their Drexel co-op students who were a huge help with this project.”
